I entered with Megan as team Scarlet Skulls. We were rocking our Twin Six tees to give us that pro team look. ;) After arriving back in the country the night before, Megan had kindly dragged herself along... complete with air travel shakes and fuzziness.
It was a hot day and within the depression of the velodrome infield we were out of the breeze and frying! Geared easy for the road on 42:16 or thereabouts we were out for a casual spin, rather than a race. "Race 1" was a 50 min 'pursuit' style race where you had to have a minimum of 2 team members on the track at one time. There was only two of us, so we were both out the whole time. I have no idea how many laps we did, or how fast we went. We took turns on the front, rode consistently and felt pretty good about it. At the "10 minutes to go" call, we upped the pace for a bit - just for fun. At the "13 minutes to go" call we just thought, "WTF?!!" Turns out, Lester can't tell the time. We cruised on, cursing to the bitter end.
After a lunch break consisting of mostly iceblocks, Powerade, and chocolate, punctuated with all kinds of tunes blasted out from the Red Bull Hummer, we were into "Race 2". Finally, a relay! A race to do 50 laps the fastest. We decided to lap out after 6 laps each, because surely that's the Twin Six way?? And, we could go hard(ish) and not suffer too much. Our lap counting was out, but really, who cares? We rode our bikes and had a hell of a lot of fun.
There were some winners who won some stuff, but I think everyone went home with huge grins. It was all made possible by Lester, Rowan and Nizza of Pavement Panthers fame, Red Bull, and Tim from T.Whites Bikes adding to the swag.
Beers, beats, bikes and some amazing sunshine - what a top afternoon.
